Fragrance Free

Helping Everyone Feel Comfortable In Our Space
Please help me keep the studio free from strong fragrances so that everyone can enjoy their practice comfortably.

Some people are particularly sensitive to fragrances, myself included. For me, exposure can cause nausea or headaches that linger after class has finished. Your care with this makes a real difference.

I know putting on perfume or using scented products can be an automatic part of getting ready. This is simply a request to pause and consider what you apply before coming to yoga.

Why it matters
The fragrance we wear becomes part of the air everyone around us breathes. Even if a scent doesn’t bother the person wearing it, it can affect someone nearby.

We can become so used to the scents we wear every day that we barely notice them ourselves. Our sense of smell gradually adapts, so a fragrance that seems faint to us may be very strong to someone nearby. It’s easy to be unaware of this, which is why a little extra care before class is appreciated.

Perfume and other fragranced products can trigger headaches, migraine, nausea and asthma symptoms in susceptible people. For women experiencing more frequent or severe migraines during perimenopause, fragrance may be one of several triggers. Leaving scented products off before class can help prevent a headache or migraine for someone sharing the room.

More than just perfume
Fragrance can also be found in deodorants, moisturisers, hair products and laundry products. Ingredients may be listed simply as “fragrance” or “parfum”, without identifying everything in the blend.

Before coming to class
  • Please leave off perfume, aftershave, cologne and scented body sprays.
  • Please choose a deodorant with little or no fragrance, keeping any scent subtle enough that it isn’t noticeable to others nearby.
  • Please avoid strongly scented moisturisers, hair products and other body products.
  • Natural products can still be strongly scented. Please also avoid wearing essential oils and perfume oils to class.

If you arrive wearing a noticeable fragrance, I may quietly ask you to wash it off before class.

Thank you for being mindful of this. It makes a real difference to me and helps everyone feel comfortable in the studio.
